Chapter One: Introduction

1.1 Background of the Study
Political accountability is a fundamental aspect of democratic governance. It ensures that elected officials are answerable to the public for their actions, policies, and resource allocation. In Minna Local Government, Niger State, political accountability has been increasingly recognized as a critical factor for reducing poverty at the grassroots level. This study aims to examine how political accountability in Minna has impacted poverty reduction initiatives, assessing both the strengths and weaknesses of government interventions in improving the living standards of the local population (Sulaimon & Usman, 2024).

1.2 Statement of the Problem
Despite various poverty alleviation programs, poverty remains a significant challenge in Minna Local Government. One of the factors contributing to this challenge is the lack of political accountability, which leads to poor implementation of policies and inadequate resource allocation for poverty reduction. This study will explore how the lack of political accountability in the allocation and management of resources affects the effectiveness of poverty reduction initiatives in Minna and propose strategies for improving political accountability to reduce poverty (Ibrahim & Suleiman, 2023).

1.3 Objectives of the Study

1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study will focus on the role of political accountability in poverty reduction within Minna Local Government, Niger State. Limitations include the challenge of quantifying the direct impact of accountability on poverty levels and the potential reluctance of public officials to disclose information regarding resource allocation.

1.8 Operational Definition of Terms

  • Political Accountability: The obligation of political leaders and government officials to be answerable for their actions and policies to the electorate.
  • Poverty Reduction: The process of improving the living standards of the poor, reducing income disparities, and addressing basic needs like healthcare, education, and housing.
